Copenhagen on its Best..

For al those non Danish-readers who are actually wondering how Copenhagen is like, here a nice 10 minute video about the city. Its a darn nice city during the summer when the sun is shining! I can’t wait for this rainy period to be over and enjoy everything that CPH has to offer!

Music: The xx – Angels

High expectation can be a curse or a gift.. The xx’ debut album, is one of my all time favorites. Even when I listen to it now, almost 3 years after the release I fall in love again with the music and life.

So when Jamie xx announced that they were working on their new album I felt both joy and already per definition some kind of disappointment. Their first album was so good, could they ever top something like that?! And to be honest, their new song it has to grow on me… I like it, but I haven’t fallen in love with it – I won’t just state because it’s by The xx that it is pure eargasm. BUT at the same time, I didn’t fell in love with their debut album overnight either. It took a lot of cuddling on the couch, eyes closed and listing to the music before I appreciated their debut as much as I do now..

I just hope, that they somehow were able to hold on to that where the magic began without repeating themselves. Are you exciting for their new album?

Story of My Life…

About 3 months ago I started studying Danish, and even though it consumes a lot of my times, I haven’t really written anything about it here.. After an intake test I was lucky enough to be able to skip the first module (which pretty much is demanding you to be a cow and say “Jeg hedder Janet og jeg kommer fra Holland” for 6 weeks). So after spending 12 more weeks, 4 days a week, 3.5 hours a day, I finished the 2nd module and now I’m finally halfway at module 3. Yes, there are actually 6 module’s before my fluency in Danish is official…

The weird thing about learning a new language is, is that you ALWAYS underestimate how hard it is.. The first time I came to Denmark I honestly thought I would be able, on basis of my Dutch language skills, to learn Danish within a year on my own. Well that’s a big friggin NO to past-me..

I am at a point where on good days I seem to understand pretty much everything (or everybody has just a crazy intense body language and I am able to read that..), I am able to interact (more or less) with the people I encounter (ergo: supermarket clerk) and I can understand tv. But on bad days, days when I’m tired (only just because I go to work, school and crossfit on a daily basis.. There definitely should be a law for more than 24 hours in a day) I don’t understand a dog’s fart! And thats frustrating!!

Denmark might be one of the easiest countries to survive in on the sole base of English. But speaking English here, does per definition means that you are putting up a barrier and are not able to fully integrate. I didn’t just move to Denmark to survive this place, I moved to be part of it.. So while I detest going to the Danish language school on pretty much a daily basis, I am determined to learn this rød grød med flode language, the things you do for love

Music: Daley

I hope that you haven’t crossed into any black cats today (and if you did, you didn’t die since you are reading my blog)..

My sister suggested Daley to me the other day and I got to say she hit the jackpot with him! He’s able to capture that 90s R&B flow (the one that Usher apparently didn’t find, since his new album is a piece of crap) and he does it soo effortless. You can download his mixtape on his website and it sounds darn good, I hope that he can capture this vibe on his first real album.

I often feel that artist have a hard time transforming their original (mixtape) sound into something profitable/commercial (Theophilius London anyone?!). You can complain and argue how they shouldn’t become commercial, but also them need to feed themselves right? But it is about holding on to that feeling that got you more commercial to begin with and not to choose the easy (euro pop/house) way out..

Best part about this? He is coming to Copenhagen! The 20th of September he will perform at Ideal Bar (I like it that they booked him for such a cosy venue) next to Vega and tickets only cost 115 kroner! You can buy your tickets HERE

New In: Happy Socks

I try to find joy in the small things in life (and I realize this sounds way more philosophical than it’s supposed to be..) and one of these joys are wearing colorful socks! Especially in Copenhagen, where black outfits seem to be more the norm, I like to wear happy socks that just peak and smile to the world under my jeans/shorts.

When I saw that Happy Socks had a 50% off sale last week I couldn’t restrain myself and bought 10 pairs of happiness!! Aren’t they cute?!

The sale is still on and when you order more than 4 socks delivery is free!
